What is Metabolism?
Metabolism is the process by which our body processes food and converts it into energy that can be used to power vital functions like breathing, blood circulation, digestion, heartbeat, brain activity, hormone production, physical movement, healing etc.
Metabolism encompasses the countless biochemical reactions that take place within each cell of a living organism every second to sustain life and maintain normal physiological function
In simpler terms, Metabolism is how our body makes and uses energy to keep us alive and functioning
This process works at different intensities in different people. How fast your metabolism works is determined mostly by your genes
Metabolic Syndrome is classically defined as the presence of 3 or more of the following risk factors:
Elevated blood sugar levels
Increased waist circumference
High triglycerides
Low HDL and
Elevated blood pressure
These parameters are typically clustered together as markers of metabolic health. Metabolic syndrome increases the risk of type 2 diabetes, obesity, fatty liver disease, NASH, cardiovascular disease, cancer, neurodegenerative diseases such as dementia, alzheimer's or stroke and hormonal imbalances to name a few
It is important to note that most individuals diagnosed with metabolic syndrome have elevated fasting insulin levels, chronic inflammation, and commonly experience symptoms such as fatigue, brain fog, digestive issues, heightened stress, and poor sleep
Metabolic health refers to how efficiently the body manages energy, from the food that we eat to how it’s stored and used, while maintaining key health parameters within a healthy range
A metabolically healthy body:
Maintains stable blood sugar levels
Responds well to insulin (the hormone that regulates glucose)
Keeps blood pressure, cholesterol, and triglycerides in healthy ranges
Efficiently manages body fat, especially visceral (abdominal) fat
Shows low levels of chronic inflammation
Adapts smoothly between fed and fasting states
Greater resilience to illness and stress
Improved mood and mental clarity
Metabolism Vs. Metabolic Health
Metabolism is something everyone has - it is always active and runs continuosly
Metabolic health reflects how well that metabolism is working
Metabolic health is dynamic and it can significantly be improved with the right combination of nutrition, movement, sleep, stress management, and targeted lifestyle changes
